Durham moves up in QS World University Rankings

(8 June 2021)

Durham University has once again been named in the world’s top 100 universities.

In the QS World University Rankings 2022, which rank 1,300 institutions across the globe, we’ve moved up by four places to 82nd position.

In addition to the QS Rankings, we have also moved up to 6th place from our previous 7th position in the UK in the Complete University Guide 2022 rankings.

Jack Moran, QS Spokesperson, said: “Durham University’s latest ascent in the QS World University Rankings is driven by the high esteem in which it is held by both the global academic community, and graduate employers. This is a testament to the outstanding work done by its faculty, leadership, and all other staff who strive to make Durham both a world-class research institution, and one that prepares students successfully for the myriad challenges they face after graduating.”

This step up in the rankings reflects our strength in world-class research and the extraordinary standard of our teaching and learning. We’re proud to be ranked in the Top 100 of this prestigious international league table.

The value of a Durham degree

As part of the new rankings, we’ve been placed 54th globally by the world’s leading employers for the quality of our education and our graduates, reflecting the very high employability prospects our students can look forward to.

We take pride in the careers support we offer our students and the high value for money of our education. We challenge our students with world-class research that has direct impact on their learning, development and progression.

We also offer a varied range of wider student experience including sports, music, theatre, volunteering and leadership development, all in the beautiful and historic setting of Durham and North East England.

Global excellence in research

Our academics are among the leading experts in their field and they conduct research that tackles some of the major challenges facing society today.

For example, we’re exploring how sniffer dogs could be trained to detect Covid-19, building and working with the next generation of telescopes to explore the mysteries of the universe, and investigating how we might reduce malaria risk by raising the heights of homes.

Setting new standards

Our strengthened World Ranking symbolises our position as a top University, both within the UK and globally.

We are ranked 25th in the Times Higher Education (THE) International Universities Rankings and were placed 87th in the THE’s Global Impact Rankings 2021 for our overall contribution to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

We are also consistently ranked inside the top 10 universities within the UK.
