Durham to lead European Employability Workshop

(16 March 2021)

Durham will bring together 41 European universities and play host to a virtual workshop as well as the signing of a historic partnership agreement.

Held on the 15th of April, the event aims to bring together colleagues from across the Coimbra Group – an international network founded in 1985 committed to creating special academic and cultural ties across universities who believe in promoting internationalisation, academic collaboration, excellence in learning and research, and service to society.

Improving graduate prospects

This virtual event seeks to explore the topic of ‘Employability in the Curriculum’ – a particularly pertinent topic in the current climate where young people's employment prospects have been impacted by the effects of the pandemic.

Across the event, we will be exploring approaches to including, and recognising, employability in formal modules and in co-curricular activities.

Presentations will be delivered by colleagues from the Universities of UC Louvain, Trinity College Dublin, Edinburgh, Durham and Barcelona covering topics such as competency assessments and methods to support student employability.

Educators and colleagues working in student employability will set the scene for round table discussions on topics raised throughout the day to inform future developments in participating Universities.

A historic moment

The day’s programme will also feature the virtual signing of the Poitiers Declaration by Vice Chancellor Professor Stuart Corbridge and the Chairman of Durham County Council and the Mayor of Durham, Councillor Katie Corrigan – a Coimbra Group initiative which signals the importance of universities working hand in hand with their local municipality, and vice versa to support one another’s development.

The virtual signing will be presided over by Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Professor O’Malley as well as the Chair of the Coimbra Group Executive Board – Professor Ludovic Thilly from the University of Poitiers.

As members of the Coimbra Group since 2016, we look forward to hosting this exciting event, networking with our European colleagues and working together to enhance student employability prospects in these challenging times.
