Just imagine if...your idea could change the world

(27 November 2019)

Just imagine if we could prevent infectious diseases and even eradicate them…

Just imagine if we could power a car using light from the sun…

Vaccination and solar powered cars might have seemed unbelievable and even impossible at the time, but these ideas became reality and changed the world.

Small ideas, big changes

Small ideas can lead to big changes. That’s why we’ve teamed up with award- winning British entrepreneur Paul Lindley OBE to host and support an international entrepreneur competition in March 2020, called just IMAGINE if….

The competition, founded by Paul, is open to anyone across the globe who has a business idea that could help address at least one of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The 17 goals promote prosperity while protecting the planet. They seek to tackle global issues, such as poverty, climate change, education and hunger.

 Winning support

Ten shortlisted finalists will present their business idea in front of a panel of expert business leaders at the March 2020 final in Durham.

Each finalist will receive expert mentoring from a leading businessperson and professional pitch training to perfect their presentation ahead of the event.

The winner will receive bespoke research support worth £75,000 from Durham University Business School and our PhD students who are part of the Durham Global Challenges Centre for Doctoral Training.

A lasting difference

Our research is making a difference to some of society’s biggest challenges.

Current projects include improving soil health in Africa, helping to find new drug targets for neglected tropical diseases, and working to prevent natural disasters in Southern Asia.

The winning project will join this list to help make a real difference to the world.
