Victory for Durham in University Challenge

(19 October 2004)

Durham cruised through to the second round of BBC2's University Challenge contest, beating Kingston University by 190 to 70.

Up to halfway the two teams closely matched each other but Durham overcame a lack of knowledge about the other creatures from the Godzilla sci-fi stable by racing ahead on their grasp of the number 13, cocktails, 17th century poets and travel guides.

Members are captain Alex Hooper (Hatfield, Classics, from Bristol), Mark Wallace (St Chad's, Archaeology, from Newcastle), Helen Appleton (St Mary's, English, from Hereford) and Robin Zigmond (Hatfield, Maths, from Harrogate).

Durham has made it to the on-screen rounds of the long-running quiz for the past six years and took the University Challenge title in 2000.
