Durham ranked top 5 in the UK

(29 May 2018)

Durham University has been ranked 5th in The Guardian University Guide 2019.

As well as being ranked in 5th position overall, the University has two subjects, English and Music, ranked as top in the UK. This result reaffirms both departments as leading within the UK as they were also top ranked in the recent Complete University Guide.

In addition, the Guardian University Guide ranks the University’s Physics, History and Geography departments all in 2nd place with 21 of the University’s subjects ranked in the top 10.

Reflecting dedication

Professor Stuart Corbridge, Vice-Chancellor and Warden of Durham University said: “To be ranked in the top 5 in this prominent league table is a pleasing result, and reflects the hard work and dedication shown by all of the staff and students across the University.

“Continuing strong results in league tables are further evidence that we are performing extremely well. However, we are not complacent and our University Strategy includes ambitious proposals to ensure that we continue to develop a first-rate educational environment, combined with world-leading research and a unique student experience. Work to deliver our strategy is well underway, and our new Teaching and Learning Centre, opening in autumn 2019, will take advantage of the latest digital technologies as well as housing education labs where new teaching and training methods can be developed.

“The dedication that our students show in combining hard work on their degree courses with engagement in our wider student experience never fails to impress. It was a significant achievement for the community outreach and volunteering work undertaken by Van Mildert College to be recognised as among the best of any college or university anywhere in the world at the recent International Green Gown Awards.”

Building on recent achievements

Durham is consistently ranked as one of the world’s leading universities as shown by its World Top 100 position in two influential global league tables.

In the QS World University Rankings 2018, the University is 78th  and in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2018 Durham is ranked 97th

In national league tables, including the Times/Sunday Times Good University Guide, Durham University is consistently recognised as one of the top universities in the UK (5th in the latest ranking).

Last month Durham University ranked 6th in the UK according to 2019 Complete University Guide – maintaining a top ten place since the guide was launched over a decade ago.
