Durham Ranked in World Top 50 for Employer Reputation

(12 September 2017)

Durham University has been ranked amongst the world’s leading universities for employer reputation in the 2018 QS Graduate Employability Rankings.

The Rankings, which are based on over 30,000 responses to the QS Employer Survey, ask employers to identify those institutions from which they source the most competent, innovative and effective graduates.

Professor Stuart Corbridge, Vice-Chancellor at Durham University, said: “This is the world’s largest survey of its kind so it’s pleasing to be ranked among the leading universities by employers.

“Durham is distinctive in combining a world-class education, research and wider student experience that equips our graduates with the knowledge and life skills that leading recruiters look for. Our students also benefit from being members of one of our Colleges, each of which offers a diverse and supportive community and outstanding opportunities for personal development.”

Students performing well

Andrew Bargery, Campus and Schools Engagement Leader at PwC, said: “We continue to have strong links with Durham University and see a large number of their students performing well in our recruitment process. The University has consistently provided us with strong numbers of undergraduates and graduates joining our programmes.

“We assess a number of competencies as part of the PwC recruitment process and applicants are required to provide specific evidence to demonstrate they have the required skills. Durham University provides a range of extra-curricular activities to enable their students to do this successfully.”

More than a degree

Durham University Geography student Antonia MacDonald added: “Durham has many opportunities for personal development. The Durham Award is a particularly significant opportunity to demonstrate your employability through University involvement, community engagement and work experience during your time at Durham University.

“I have recently been involved in a pilot scheme with Durham Students’ Union – a Leadership and Development Programme through which you can gain a Level 5 Certificate in Leadership and Management that is accredited by the Chartered Management Institute.

“This highlights how the opportunities for personal development at Durham are endless. You gain so much more than just a degree.”

Building on success

The results of the 2018 QS Graduate Employability Rankings follow the recent HESA survey which found that 97.9 per cent of Durham University undergraduates completing their first degree were in employment or further study three and a half years after graduation, the highest rate of any UK university.

The strength and effectiveness of our College communities contributed to Durham recently winning the Best Student Community Award at the National Student Housing Survey Awards.
