From Elm Tree Pub Quiz to University Challenge

(19 November 2002)

Durham University students are through to the second round in this year's University Challenge after beating Queens' College Cambridge by 190 points to 115.

This year's team is composed of:
Chris Joby (team captain) MA theology, St. John's College from Norwich
Simon Harris ,History, Politics and Philosophy, Grey College from Hereford
James Henderson, Natural Sciences, Grey College from Dumfries
Will Riley, Economics and Politics, St Aidan's from Wivenhoe

The team participates weekly in the Elm Tree Pub Quiz at Crossgate in Durham, unofficially the hardest pub quiz in Durham according to team leader Chris Joby and has now taken on the challenge to go national by participating in University Challenge.

After being through a knock-out stage in the Inter-Collegiate quiz, where Durham's best students run off against each other, a team of the top four students was composed by last year's University Challenge team, which made it to the second round in last year's televised student team quiz tournament.

Durham has taken the title twice in the television show's history- in 1977 when Bamber Gascoigne was in the chair and more recently in 2000 in the new series under current presenter Jeremy Paxman, one of Britain's most distinguished television journalists, who is known for his hard hitting interview style.

At the end, after going through a large amount of seemingly obscure and specialist questions while dealing with Jeremy Paxman, the eventual champions receive the trophy in the shape of a book engraved with various symbols. The University of Durham is hoping for a third win in this series. (PR1063)
