Team Durham collect for The Durham Foodbank ahead of Thanksgiving

(22 November 2021)

This year, Team Durham will be hosting a food drive the week leading up to American Thanksgiving to help gather donations for the Durham Foodbank. With a majority of TD’s postgraduate scholars hailing from the United States, we wanted to bring some American traditions across the pond.

Thanksgiving, celebrated this year on November 25th, is a time to feast on delicious food while reflecting on and being thankful for everything throughout the previous year. A centerpiece of Thanksgiving is often charitable donations to help those less fortunate.

The Durham Foodbank provides support to people in need in the greater County Durham community. Since its start in 2011, the foodbank has served more than 11,000 people, with the number continuing to grow every year. It relies on donations from the community in order to keep its stock up, as well as over 400 volunteers who provide their time to make sure the foodbank can function to serve those in need. During this time of year, especially going into the holiday season, the foodbank needs increased levels of support.

To help contribute to TD’s first Thanksgiving Food Drive, you can bring non-perishable food items and toiletries to Maiden Castle. Donation collection will occur over the next week, up until noon on Thanksgiving, when all the items will be brought directly to the foodbank.
