DUHC Affiliate Jack Tranter selected for the Euro Hockey Championships
(4 June 2021)
We are delighted to announce that DUHC Men’s Premier League Goalkeeper Jack Tranter has been selected to attend the Euro Hockey Championships in Amsterdam with the Men’s Senior Wales Squad. Wales will open the tournament this evening in their first game against Germany.
During his career, Jack has played in the World League and European A division where his man of the match performance in the final game against Ireland helped Wales retain their place in the A division.
Tranter joined DUHC at the beginning of the 2020/21 season following the men’s promotion to the premier league and has been a huge asset to the squad despite their fragmented season due to the pandemic. He brings with him years of senior international experience with Wales which has been priceless to the University side following their promotion to the country’s top league. A commanding force at the back, Tranter expertly guides his team, helping to develop those around him and as a result driving the programme forward from week to week.
As a full time employee of Barnard Castle School, Tranter is an ‘affiliate’ player and is only eligible to play in the EHL and not the BUCS league on a Wednesday. The affiliate programme is unique as it gives those that aren’t students the opportunity to play for one of the top hockey programmes in the country. Affiliates are extremely valuable in the student game and bring with them a wealth of experience, varying from senior internationals, such as Tranter, to University staff members, Durham University alums and also U.18 players looking to join a National League club as part of their ongoing development.
Head of Hockey, Gareth Weaver-Tyler said, “We are so pleased for Jack for making selection for the Euro Hockey Championships, a place that is thoroughly deserved. Jack is an amazing talent and has been an asset to our club from the moment he arrived, bettering not only the men’s squad but also enriching the affiliate programme too. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Jack for joining DUHC on an affiliate basis and look forward to working with him in the seasons to come.”
DUHC President Harriet Tebbs said, “On behalf of all at DUHC we extend our congratulations to Jack on his selection with Wales and wish him and the squad the very best for the tournament. I know the club will be watching and supporting him throughout. Our affiliate programme has gone from strength to strength and it is our hope that over the next couple of years we continue to build this agenda and attract more affiliate players to Durham.”
