Durham University Fencing Club shortlisted for University Club of the Year by British Fencing

(7 December 2020)

The annual British Fencing Community Awards recognise the best clubs, coaches, fencers and volunteers and their contribution to fencing.

Durham University Fencing Club have been recognised by British Fencing and shortlisted for the University Club of the Year award due to be presented online on social media sometime in December. Stewart Watson and Beth Davidson, DUFC’s assistant coaches, have also been nominated and shortlisted for the Viveca Abrahams Innovation Award.

During the 2019/20 season, the University club experienced its most successful competitive BUCS year of any University club ever, taking three gold medals out of a possible six and one bronze at the BUCS individuals as well as both first teams reaching the Championship finals as top seeds. Unfortunately, the Championships couldn’t be played due to Covid-19, however, the teams were announced as joint winners. The Men’s 3rd team won the Northern Conference Cup and the Novice program was restructured with a new multi group format which saw it grow to become the largest club in Britain introducing new members to the sport of whom went on to win regional medals.

This year also saw the launch of ‘The Fencing @Home project’, put together by assistant coaches Stewart Watson and Beth Davidson who have been nominated for the Viveca Abrahams Innovation Award. The project is a remote training scheme of online accessible videos catered to all levels of fencing ability offering fitness, coordination, flexibility and technique training as well as video analysis and theory sessions. These sessions engage a global audience including members logging in from Canada and the USA.

We look forward to keeping our eye on the British Fencing social media channels @britishfencing throughout December as we wait with eager anticipation for the winners to be announced.

Congratulations to all involved at the club for making it to this stage, we wish you the best of luck over the coming weeks!
