(7 September 2020)

Durham University has risen to fourth in The Guardian University Guide 2021.

As well as the overall ranking, the University has 20 subjects ranked in the top ten (12 in the top five), with Music being ranked first in the UK for the second year in a row. English and Chemistry are ranked second, Forensic Science and Archaeology third.

Religious Studies and Theology, Classics and Ancient History, Philosophy, Earth and Marine Science, and Modern Languages and Linguistics are ranked fourth, while History, Physics and Sports Science are ranked fifth.

Additionally we have been ranked 7th in the UK for the number of graduates who find graduate-level jobs, or are in further study at professional or Higher Education level, within 15 months of graduation.

The ranking puts us firmly among the UK’s and the world’s leading universities having also been ranked 86th in the QS World University Rankings 2021 and in the world top 100 of the THE World Reputation Rankings 2019.

Record number of world top 100 subjects

A record 19 of our subjects are also in the World Top 100 of the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2020, including 11 in the World Top 50.

Nationally, we’re consistently a top ten UK university and we’re ranked seventh in The Complete University Guide 2021 and seventh in the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2020.

Investing in new facilities

As with all universities, 2020 has been a challenging year us as we manage the impact of coronavirus.

But we’ve continued to invest heavily in new facilities to further enhance our student experience, including the opening this academic year of the new Teaching and Learning Centre and the Maiden Castle Sports and Wellbeing Park.

New Colleges to open

The new academic year will see the opening of two new Colleges – a new home for John Snow College and the brand-new South College; both at Mount Oswald in Durham City.

Our new Mathematical Sciences and Computer Science building on the University’s Upper Mountjoy site is also due to at the start of 2021.
