#DurhamGoesTheDistance celebrating 40 years of the Great North Run
(18 August 2020)
Team Durham are delighted to launch #DurhamGoestheDistance, a virtual event, celebrating 40 years of the Great North Run on the 13th September 2020.
Our aim is to engage as much of the Durham community as possible, starting off the new academic year with some healthy competition and team bonding, all whilst fundraising for the charity Sport in Action. The charity uses sport as a vehicle to help the very poorest of children in Zambia to help provide them life opportunities in extremely difficult circumstances.
Team Durham invites all staff, students, community members and alumni to take part and our mission is to engage at least 40 teams, to honour the 40th anniversary of the GNR and take part in a challenge of completing the 13.1 miles as a team.
Teams would have from the 5th September to the 12th September to complete the distance, logging their mileage on our #DurhamGoestheDistance Strava group. Each team would donate £1 per mile to support Sport in Action and are also encouraged to seek sponsorship in addition to their minimum donation to the cause.
There is no minimum team number requirement, however the more participants, the less running you will have to do and the more sponsorship you could raise for this fantastic cause.
Two leader boards will be maintained; one recording the fastest half marathon time, the second noting the team who raises the most money for Sport in Action.
Winners will be announced on Sunday 13th September and team members will be encouraged to send in their running selfies tagging @TeamDurham and hashtagging #DurhamGoesTheDistance.
If you would like to enter a team, please do so by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org and you will be sent more information with regards to logging your mileage and donations in due course.
Team entries need to be submitted by Friday 28th August 2020.
Please do get involved in this fun challenge for a really worthwhile cause.
