Pledging our support to the economy

(30 July 2020)

We’ve pledged our support to a new plan to help the North East of England economy recover from the impact of Covid-19.

Durham is part of the North East Covid-19 economic recovery group, led by the North East Local Enterprise Partnership, who is responsible for promoting and developing the region’s economic growth.

The group, which includes North East of England universities and other organisations, has collectively committed to help stabilise, adapt, and rebuild the regional economy.

Research and recovery

We’ve always been committed to supporting the region’s economy and we’re already leading a number of programmes that help our research make a difference.

The Northern Accelerator programme aims to turn world-class research into commercial opportunities by bringing together academics with business leaders with a host of funding and support to form sustainable businesses.

Led by Durham with Newcastle, Northumbria, and Sunderland universities, Northern Accelerator has already created 28 spin-out businesses, including from our Computer Science and Biosciences departments.

Student skills and talent

Durham is home to talented and skilled students from across the globe who are using their knowledge to help local businesses.

Our Intensive Industrial Innovation Programme helps small and medium sized businesses (known as SMEs) grow and develop with the help of talented PhD students.

Led by Durham with Newcastle, Northumbria and Teesside universities, the programme has placed over 50 students with SMEs across the North East of England in sectors such as flood management, biosciences, and data science.

Northern partnership

Durham is part of the N8 research partnership, a group of the eight most research-intensive universities across the North of England.

We support a number of N8 initiatives, including Net Zero North which aims to support clean, green economic regeneration.

Our Durham Energy Institute is already leading a number of projects in clean energy, including developing technology and processes to decarbonise heat to significantly reduce UK greenhouse gas emissions.
