Durham ranked 4th in The Guardian University Guide
(16 May 2017)
Durham University has moved up to 4th in the UK according to The Guardian University Guide League Table 2018.
This ranking is a move up from 6th place in last year’s survey and is Durham’s highest ever position in this league table, reaffirming its standing as one of the UK’s top universities.
Top ranked subjects
As well as the University’s overall improvement, the guide ranks Durham’s Archaeology Department as top in the UK.
The University’s School of Education was ranked in 2nd place and five subjects are ranked in the top three in, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, English, Geography & Environmental Studies and Religious Studies & Theology.
Professor Stuart Corbridge, Vice-Chancellor and Warden of Durham University said: “This is an outstanding achievement and reflects the hard work and dedication shown by all of the staff and students within the departments across the University.
“These league tables are further evidence that we are performing extremely well. However, we are not complacent and our new Durham University Strategy 2017-2027 includes ambitious proposals to ensure that we continue to be world-leading across research, education and the wider student experience.”
Durham's highest ranking
The Guardian University Guide is made up of a number of indicators of overall student experience, including satisfaction with their course, teaching quality and feedback, based on the National Student Survey (NSS). The Guardian Guide also looks at the key issue of employability, taking into account graduate prospects based on the percentage of graduates who are in graduate level employment or further study six months after graduating. Other contributing factors include entrance qualifications held by new students, degree results achieved and student/staff ratios.
Distinctive student experience
Professor Corbridge added "To have achieved our highest ever position of 4th in The Guardian University Guide once again demonstrates how Durham’s first-rate educational environment, combined with world-leading research and a unique student experience, enables our students to develop the knowledge and skills sought after by leading graduate recruiters from across the world.”
Durham is consistently ranked as one of the world’s leading universities as shown by its World Top 100 position in two influential global league tables.
In the QS World University Rankings 2016-17, the University is 74th and has risen from 3rd to 2nd among UK universities for research citations. In the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2016-17, Durham is ranked 96th .
In national league tables, including the Times/Sunday Times Good University Guide, Durham University is consistently recognised as one of the top universities in the UK (4th in the latest ranking).
