20th Century Music 1 | the 1960s

Saturday 10th February 2018
4:00pm Department of Music
Music School Palace Green, Durham

Lore Lixenberg (mezzo-soprano)
Ives Ensemble

Programme:
Luigi Nono - La Fabbrica Illuminata
Oliver Leith - Three Pamphlets on not Staring at the Sun (WP)
Michael von Biel - String Quartet nr 2
Wojciech Kilar - Training 68

This first concert in our festival brings us back to the 60s, when unbridled experimentation, idealism, and optimism coloured the societal, political, and musical landscape. Our programme explores the zeitgeist of the decade through
all of these dimensions. On the more experimental side of things, Von Biel shows us how to make a string quartet sound as different to the traditional voice of this ensemble as can possibly be imagined, while Kilar presents us with a training programme for both composer and performers, making “music out of something that has hitherto been considered incapable of carrying the form”. Luigi Nono, on the other hand, takes a more politicised approach in his piece, a transcendental work of musical poetry based on the foundation of class struggle. To mirror this, Oliver Leith’s brand new piece subtly politicises our contemporary thinking, using texts taken from one of our most widely-read newspapers.
