Biography

Michael Worboys is doctoral student in the Department of Music, and mathematician who holds a chair at a London university. His PhD explores the role that mathematics and formal methods play in the compositional process. He is approaching this topic by the composition and critical evaluation of a portfolio of acoustic and electronic musical works. Issues of interest include the types of mathematical structures that can be used in composition, especially discrete and combinatorial structures; the degree of transparency of these structures to the listener; the degree to which these processes should be rigorously followed in the compositional process.

Before coming to Durham, Michael completed an MMus in Composition at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, for which he was awarded a distinction.
