Interpersonal entrainment project publishes first paper

Published in the journal Frontiers in Digital Humanities, the article contributes to the continuing development of tools to extract movement data from video recordings. In researching interpersonal interaction and coordination between musicians in the field, it is often not feasible to use complex motion capture systems. Hence, the measuring and tracking of body movements using video recordings can be of significant value.
The project's Postdoctoral Research Associate Kelly Jakubowski and an international team of researchers including Durham's project leaders Tuomas Eerola and Martin Clayton measure musicians’ movements from videos, validating these measurements against motion capture data from the same performances.
Interpersonal Entrainment in Music Performance (IEMP) is an interdisciplinary research project, based on a large-scale international collaboration between a group of scholars with a common interest in interpersonal coordination and synchrony in music-making. It is funded by the UK’s Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) for two years from April 2016.
