Personal Profile

I completed my undergraduate degree and my PhD here in Durham and have been teaching in the department since 1991. Before joining MLAC, I worked on a number of projects in the University's School of Education.

As Deputy Director of the MA in Translation Studies I maintain our links with the European Commission's Directorate General for Translation (DGT) and with partner institutions in the EMT (European Masters in Translation) network, with the Chartered Institute of Linguists and with placement providers in UK and Europe. I am careers liaison officer for MLAC.

In terms of scholarship, I have particular interests in the pedagogy of language learning, in translator training, in the use of ICT, especially for developing skills in translation and interpreting, in project-based learning and employability. I am working with two colleagues on the third edition of Thinking French Translation: A course in translation method, to be published by Routledge. I am also working with a team from Durham University Museums on the development and evaluation of a translation placement scheme, supported by an Enhancing the Student Learning Experience award.
