Project Title and Description

Consultation Behaviour with Online Resources in English-Chinese Translation: An Eye-tracking, Screen-recording and Retrospective Study

This project aims to study the behaviours of consulting online resources during translation from English to Chinese. The consultation behaviours will be studied from three aspects, including attention distribution, subjects’ preferences on resources and information evaluation behaviour. We will study both translation students and professional translators, and compare their behaviours to provide suggestions for translator training. In this project, data of eye-tracking, retrospective interview and quality assessment will be triangulated to testify the topics in question. Four research gaps have been found from previous studies, including the connection between translation problems and consultation behaviours, information evaluation of subjects, the differences between professional and non-professional translators, and the connection between consultation behaviour and translation quality. This project aims to fill the existing research gaps, inspire further research on information behaviour in translation, and propose suggestions to translator training and translation education.
