Numerical Analysis Seminars: Linear and nonlinear magnetoacoustic wave propagation in the neighbourhood of a 2D magnetic X-point

Presented by James McLaughlin, Northumbria University

26 November 2010 14:15 in CM105

The presentation will introduce the topic of MagnetoHydroDynamics (MHD)
and MHD wave motions, and will discuss magnetic field topology,
specifically magnetic null points. We will then investigate (and
contrast) the nature of linear and nonlinear magnetoacoustic wave
propagation in the neighbourhood of two-dimensional null points using
both analytical solutions and numerical simulations. No prior knowledge
of MHD will be assumed and this presentation will be of interest to
those interested in fluid dynamics, magnetism, numerical simulations and
plasma physics.
