Request Funding

When to request funding for Article Processing Charges (APCs)

Funding is available for papers acknowledging funding from one of the UK Research Councils: AHRC, BBSRC, EPSRC, ESRC, MRC, NERC or STFC.

The current RCUK Block Grant award period runs from 1st April 2020 to the 31st March 2021. Any funds that are committed for you will remain committed until then end of the award period.

During this period, whilst funds remain, we will accept requests for funding in both fully open access and hybrid open access journals. Please note, however, the differences in when we will accept and process these requests:

Journal type When to make your request for APC funding
Articles in fully OA journals

Any time from the point of submission

Requests must be made prior to publication

Articles in hybrid journals which do not offer a compliant green open access option (according to Sherpa Fact - new beta tool at - new beta tool at https://v2.sherpa.ac.uk/fact/)

Requests must be made prior to publication

Articles in hybrid journals which do offer a compliant green open access option (according to Sherpa Fact - new beta tool athttps://v2.sherpa.ac.uk/fact/)

At the point of acceptance

Requests must be made prior to publication

If you would like to discuss this further, please contact us.

Some things to note

If the Block Grant is your only potential means to make a payment, do not request gold open access from a publisher until you have received confirmation from the Open Access team that funds have been committed for you. Payment cannot be guaranteed for any invoices received prior to formal approval.

Once you have funds committed for you it is your responsibility to tell the publisher that you would like to publish gold open access.

We can only accept requests for funding prior to publication. If your paper is published before you make your funding request and it is not open access with a Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY) licence it is very unlikely that a payment will be made to publish your paper open access retrospectively.

Grant acknowledgement

Funded research should include a full grant acknowledgement, including external grant number/s.

Example of funder-approved acknowledgement format:

  • Single grant

This work was supported by [Funder] [grant number xxxxx].

  • Multiple grants

This work was supported by the [Funder 1] [grant numbers xxxx, yyyy]; [Funder 2] [grant number zzzz]; and [Funder 3] [grant number aaaa].

Licence

The only licence that we are permitted to pay for from the RCUK Block Grant is the Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY)

If you select the wrong licence by mistake and the publisher refuses to make the change we will not be able to make the payment for the APC and you may be liable to fund the charge from elsewhere.
