Paying for Gold

Publishing open access does not have to mean that any additional payment is made to the publisher, either by the author or the author’s institution.

Many journals will permit the author to self-archive their articles in a repository, such as Durham Research Online (DRO). These are then made freely available from the repository, often after an embargo period has expired.

However, you may choose to publish via the gold route to open access. This may be because this is your preferred route to open access, or it is the preference of your funder, or you may feel that the most suitable journal for your article is a fully open access journal (such as PLoS ONE or Scientific Reports).

Publishing in gold open access often incurs additional costs in the form of an Article Processing Charge (APC).

The University receives a grant from UKRI to pay open access costs for papers acknowledging funding from AHRC, BBSRC, ESRC, EPSRC, MRC, NERC or STFC. This grant is administered centrally by the Library for peer-reviewed journal articles and conference proceedings by Durham University-affiliated corresponding authors and/or PIs of eligible grants.

The "RCUK Open Access Policy" and FAQs can be accessed directly via the UKRI webpages.

Requests for funding should be made to the Open Access team either via the Staff Profile System or via email and must be made prior to requesting Gold open access from a publisher. For full details please see the Request Funding webpages.

A funder may consider open access charges an allowable cost for their grant. Please ensure that you refer to the conditions of the grant or contact the funder directly for information.

The average cost of an APC paid for by the Library in 2018-19 was approximately £2300 (including VAT); however, this fee can vary dramatically across publishers and journal titles (the range over this period was from £200 to £5016.40 for an individual APC). The Open Access team can provide a more detailed breakdown of potential costs, if required.

Durham University has a preference for the green route to open access and as a result does not provide any central funds to cover the costs of gold open access.

Some fully open access journals operate waiver schemes for their fees. You should investigate these prior to submission and contact the Library Open Access team if you would like any further guidance.

The University invests in a number of deals with publishers which will save Durham-affiliated corresponding authors up to 100% on the cost of an Article Processing Charge (APC). To find out more about these please go to our Publisher Deals page.
