Library Services for Part-Time and Distance Learners
Postal Loans Service available: Did you know that students registered on part-time and distance learning courses can ask for library books to be posted to their home address? Simply click on the box marked "Postal Loan Service" below.
The library offers a range of special services to help students doing part-time or distance learning courses.
We appreciate that it can be difficult (sometimes impossible) to get to the library to borrow the books that you need for your course. Use the Postal Loans Service to ask us to post a Durham University book to you. For a £3.50 charge we will post out “standard loan” books to an address anywhere in the UK. The charge is added to your library record when the book is posted.
If you do not need to read the whole book then we have a Copy Service where we can scan a book chapter or an article from a journal and send it to you via email. There is a £1.00 charge per scan. The charge would be added to your library record when the scan is supplied.
The Copy Service can only supply scans from books and journals held within Durham University Library. If you want something which is not held in Durham then you can request it via the Library’s Document Delivery Service (DDS). Articles can be delivered to your email, or to the postal address selected on the request form. (We cannot post DDS books via the Postal Loans Service since they are very costly if lost.) There is a charge for items supplied via the Document Delivery Service, however some departments pay for requests so check who pays for your DDS requests before making a DDS request.
Sorry, but the Copy Service and Postal Loans Service are only available to students registered on part-time or distance learning courses. Students who are away from Durham on placement might be eligible, but full time students are expected to be able to visit the library regularly.
Full time students on placement away from the university as part of their courses are eligible to use the Copy Service and Postal Loans Service (although we only post to UK addresses). You should ask your supervisor to get in touch with Judith Walton to give the dates of your placement and confirm that you need to use these services. I will then place a note on your library record to say that you have special permission to use the services. If you try to place requests before a note is added to your library record, then your request would be automatically cancelled.
