Written in England, for the diocese of Canterbury to judge by item 4's lack of provision for a bishop, as opposed to an archbishop, and its treatment of Dunstan's name; type (iv) initials in a style very close to that of Christ Church Canterbury work, s. xi ex., as Prof. C. R. Dodwell has confirmed.

Belonged by s. xi/xii in north-east England, see item 1(a,c,f), most probably to Durham Cathedral Priory, see also item 17(b,d) and the textual connection of item 7 with a Durham Cathedral Priory missal.

Secundo folio innocua (f. 3).

Scribbles in many margins, s. xvi/xvii, including e.g. 'my troncons sere voupes | my peper weenes', f. 94v, also a few sketches, e.g. f. 59 a man 'T H' in doublet and hose and a woman; and several giving names, almost all of them with some Durham connection:

'Thomas Horslye awe this booke ...', f. 21v, and similarly f. 94v; 'Thomas Horsley', f. 55v; 'Isti liber pertinit bere it well in mynd | ad me Thomas Horslye bothe curtis and kynd | A uincula doloris Cryst him brynge ad | vitam eternam to the ever lasting kyng | amen <god saue the grace of god>', f. 56v; 'Thomas horsley is a honest man', f. 112, s. xvi; his scribbles, ff. 90v, 107v, 109v, etc.; 'Margrete Horslye | Nycholas Whitfeilde', f. 98v; the name Thomas Horsley is found in two Durham Cathedral Priory manuscripts now elsewhere, Cambridge Trinity Coll. 1227 and London B.L. Royal 6 A.v, and also in Durham Dean & Chapter Library OOO OOO

'Henere Heghington', f. 59v; 'To my Lunge Frend | Antony Chaytour is ... a Skotes knave ...', f. 60, perhaps referring to Antony Chaytor of Croft (N. Yorks.) aged 48 in 1592, see Surtees, IV,ii p. 111;

'Thomas Broune', f. 69;

'Be it known ... That I William Tood do awe unto Antonie Watson ...', f. 22v;

'Francis Perkeson', f. 93v;

'Rogere clarke aw thes booke amen', f. 47v.

'Christoferus Skepper', f. 21v, subscribing item 6, cf. the clerk of the bishop of Durham's halmote court 1594, d. 1623 REF ???

'Jo. Heath', f. 2, s. xvii, probably the fourth of that name of Kepier (1 mile north of Durham), 1604-64.

'Liber Hymnorum', f. 1v, in the hand of George Davenport.
