Bodies of Evidence Castle Tour
11.15 - 12:05
Every city has its secrets and Durham is no exception.
In November 2013, two mass burials were discovered in an area being developed as a new café for Palace Green Library. After over 350 years, a team of archaeologists from Durham University were able to confirm that the burials were some of a group of Scottish prisoners who died following the Battle of Dunbar in 1650.
This bespoke tour of Durham Castle will explore the Civil War and the story of the Scottish soldiers. Linked to the Bodies of Evidence exhibition, it allows you to see first-hand where they might have been treated for illnesses, what they would have seen when they were marched here and how the castle was used during their time here. See how Durham was changed overnight with the arrival of these men.
Our knowledgeable and friendly tour guides will take you through the gatehouse and into heart of the historic building. You will experience the castles long history; focusing on the turbulent Civil War years and the Scottish soldiers brought to Durham from the Battle of Dunbar. Find out about the Civil War weapons in the Tunstall Gallery and what became of the castle after the wars.
Due to the residential nature of the building entrance is by guided tour only. Tours last approximately 50 minutes.
Tours will be available 31 July and 31 August. On both days, tours will be leaving Palace Green reception area at 11.15 and 1.45.
Visitors wishing to take part in this bespoke guided tour of Durham Castle are required to purchase tickets at Palace Green Library reception. You will then meet your tour guide outside of Durham Castle. Please note that spaces are limited and can be booked in advance by contacting Palace Green Library by telephone on +44 (0)191 334 2932.
The historic nature and layout of the Castle means that the majority of the building is inaccessible to wheelchair users. The tour route involves many steps and staircases, some of which are uneven.
