11.2.2 : Role description for chairs of Faculty Education Committees (Postgraduate)

 

Role title:

Chair of Faculty Education Committee (Postgraduate)

 

Key responsibilities:

[Note:  there may be circumstances where the chair of FEC needs to delegate consideration of a particular issue to another senior officer of their faculty, for example where an issue relates to the board of studies of which the chair of FLTC is themselves a member or where the chair of FEC is absent from the University, e.g. for reasons of ill health]

Strategy

1. Developing, monitoring and reviewing postgraduate education strategy across the Faculty.

2. Working with the faculty's departments/schools, Dean of Graduate School and the Centre for Academic and Researcher Development to maintain and develop training provision for postgraduate students.

Governance

3. Chairing the Faculty Education Committee (Postgraduate), which normally meets at least once a term.

4. Representing the Faculty on the University's Education Committee.

Programme and module approval

5. Representing the Faculty on panels considering proposals to establish new postgraduate programmes of study, and new collaborative partnerships involving postgraduate provision.

6. Considering proposals from departments within the Faculty to establish (in relation to taught postgraduate provision) new modules, withdraw existing modules, and to amend existing programmes or modules, and deciding whether to take action on behalf of Faculty Education Committee (Postgraduate) to approve these proposals.

Monitoring and review

7. Serving on the teams carrying out periodic reviews for departments within the Faculty (except for reviews of the postholder's own department).

8. Serving as a member of the Faculty Periodic Review and Accreditation Panel that considers all reports on periodic reviews and external accreditation processes for departments/schools within the faculty.

9. Chairing meetings of the Faculty Collaborative Provision Panels considering postgraduate programmes, ensuring that effective annual monitoring is taking place of collaborative partnerships based in the Faculty.

10. Considering departmental reports of annual reviews of taught programmes as they relate to taught postgraduate provision, ensuring that issues identified in these reports are addressed and preparing a faculty overview of these reports for consideration by Faculty Education Committees and Quality and Standards Sub-Committee.

11. Considering departmental/school reports of annual reviews of research degree programmes, ensuring that issues identified in these reports are addressed and preparing a faculty overview of these reports for consideration by Faculty Eduction Committees and Quality and Standards Sub-Committee.

Assessment

12. Considering departmental nominations for the appointment of external and internal examiners for taught postgraduate programmes, and making recommendations to Education Committee for the appointment of external examiners.

13. Considering external examiner reports for taught postgraduate programmes within the Faculty, ensuring that all issues raised by external examiners area addressed (including responding on behalf of the University when external examiners raise issues of University policy) and preparing a faculty overview of these reports for consideration by Faculty Education Committee (Postgraduate), and Quality and Standards Sub-Committee.

14. Considering the minutes of all boards of examiners for taught postgraduate programmes in the Faculty, ensuring that issues identified in these minutes and preparing a faculty overview of these reports for consideration by Faculty Education Committee (Postgraduate), and Quality and Standards Sub-Committee.

15. Appointing examiners of research degree programmes in the Faculty.

16. Considering reports from internal and external examiners on the examination of research degrees, including both consideration of the recommendations from the examiners of research degree programmes on the award of higher research degrees and of any issues of strategy, policy and procedure arising from these reports.

Student progress

17. Considering the annual reports from research students and supervisory teams, ensuring that issues identified in these reports are addressed and preparing a faculty overview of these reports for consideration by Faculty Education Committee (Postgraduate) and Quality and Standards Sub-Committee.

18. Considering negative recommendations from departments arising from the one-year review of research students, and deciding on the action to be taken as a result of such a recommendation.

19. Considering on behalf of the Faculty concession requests relating to postgraduate students.
