1.3.3.4: Departmental English Language Levels for Entry on Condition of a Pre-Sessional Programme

1.3.3.4: Departmental English Language Levels for Entry on Condition of a Pre-Sessional Programme

1. The table below indicates University Pre-Sessional course entry requirements for applicants not meeting the level for direct entry. For applicants presenting scores lower than the minimum entry level for a 12 week Pre-Sessional course, Academic Departments/Schools may consider admitting on condition of requiring attendance and successful completion of 2 or more terms of the Year Round Pre-Sessional course, to be agreed in consultation with the English Language Centre.

2. For applicants who require a Tier 4 Student Visa for any course below degree level (this includes English language Pre-Sessional courses) the University are not permitted to accept any English language evidence other than a Secure English Language Test (SELT) from this list that has also been taken at an approved test centre on this list.

Therefore, when viewing the information in the table below, please first follow the above link to check whether your test and scores will be acceptable for entry to a Pre-Sessional course. Please also see footnote 1 at the bottom of this page for further information for applicants who do not currently have a SELT from an approved test centre.

For advice on the suitability of English language evidence for entry to Pre-Sessional courses, please contact the Student Recruitment and Admissions Office.

3. Postgraduate applicants who have accepted an offer of a place on a full time postgraduate programme may become eligible for an integrated degree programme once they meet all the non-English language conditions of their offer, depending on the results of the English language qualification presented. Postgraduate applicants who are eligible to receive an offer for an integrated degree programme with Durham Academic Literacy Induction (DALI) may not need to have a Secure English Language Test (SELT) as we are able to use our own method of English Language assessment for applicants requiring a Tier 4 Student Visa.

The integrated degree programme begins with Durham Academic Literacy Induction (DALI) and means eligible applicants would not then need to retake IELTS (or equivalent). If an applicant is eligible for an integrated degree programme offer then they will be advised of this by the Academic Department to which they have applied for postgraduate study.

4. Postgraduate applicants eligible to receive an integrated degree programme offer with Durham Academic Literacy Induction (DALI) can be issued with a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) for the entirety of the integrated degree programme.

5. Successful completion of a Pre-Sessional course normally requires the student to achieve a Pre-Sessional exit grade of 'Pass.Students studying Durham Academic Literacy Induction (DALI) as part of an integrated degree programme must successfully complete the English language (DALI) element of the programme in order to progress onto the postgraduate element of the programme.

6. Please note that there is a dedicated Pre-Sessional course for Foundation Centre applicants.

7. The Foundation Centre reserves the right to admit candidates at the lower of the two specified levels, where other aspects of the applicant's overall academic and/or English language profile are strong.

[1] Postgraduate applicants who are eligible to receive an offer for an integrated degree programme with Durham Academic Literacy Induction (DALI) may not need to have a Secure English Language Test (SELT) as we are able to use our own method of English Language assessment for applicants requiring a Tier 4 Student Visa. Please see paragraph 3 below for further information regarding integrated degree programmes.
