This essay argues that Hegel defends a "unified" theory of punishment bringing together elements of retribution, deterrence and rehabilitation. This pluralist view of punishment has often been overlooked because commentators fail to appreciate the systematic nature of Hegel's arguments and justifications. Moreover, this view of Hegel appears in the work of British Idealists, such as TH Green.
