Durham Law School is a top 50 QS world ranked law school and our research was 3rd best in the UK's last national Research Excellence Framework in 2014. We are home to nine research groups creating critical mass in key research areas with active series of events and collaborations.

We are proud to deliver some of the best results for student satisfaction and employability – and our graduates include some of the law’s leading figures. Durham Law School is a world leader in legal education and research. Our award-winning academic staff generates ground-breaking research with impact and active in public engagement both nationally and internationally. Durham Law School is in the QS World Rankings top 50 law schools and our research was ranked 3rd best in the UK's last national Research Excellence Framework in 2014. We are internationally recognised across several key research clusters including Public Law and Human Rights, Commercial and Corporate Law, EU and International Law, Biolaw and an emerging leader in Chinese Law.

Our research is inspired and supported by our research groups attracting distinguished speakers, workshops and a range of opportunities for staff and students to benefit from, become involved with, and enjoy. Our teaching is award-winning, passionate and research-led. We bring the latest insights from our internationally recognised research and high impact work with policy makers to our lectures and a firm commitment to small group seminar teaching in seminars and our tutorial system much prized by employers. Our intellectual community comprises a diverse and international body of staff working together with a large and diverse group of postgraduate research students.

Our award-winning academics are leaders in their research areas producing ground-breaking legal research with impact on policy-makers and active in public engagement both nationally and globally.

We are internationally recognised across several key research clusters including Public Law and Human Rights, Commercial and Corporate Law, EU and International Law, Biolaw and an emerging leader in Chinese Law.

Projects

Durham Law School is active in policy engagement. Our work covers areas like changes to the Human Rights Act, unacceptable forms of work, citizenship and immigration, image-based sexual abuse, security sector reform and much more.

The Law School's research is frequently discussed in the media including BBC News, ITV News, Sky News, leading broadsheets from The Guardian to the Daily Telegraph and academic staff are regularly invited to Westminster, the Scottish Parliament and beyond to give evidence and deliver substantive impact on some of the leading legal issues today. Durham Law School provides support and training to develop policy impact with an excellent track record of successes.

Facilities

The Law School is located in Durham University’s purpose-built, state of the art £48.4m sustainable building development named the Palatine Centre - and the winner of the 2013 Local Authority Building Control Building Excellence Northern Award for best educational building.

The Palatine Centre is one of the most iconic and best-equipped buildings in the UK to study law with a Harvard-styled Hogan Lovells lecture theatre, moot court room, spacious dedicated undergraduate and postgraduate study suites with superb views of Durham Cathedral, attractive social areas and state of the art wireless and audio-video enabled research spaces.

The University's law library is located immediately next door in the University’s Bill Bryson Library with smaller law collections located in the libraries of individual colleges across campus. We subscribe to a wide range of online journals and have access to all the major legal databases, including HeinOnline, Lexis-Nexis and Westlaw (UK, USA and China) in addition to paper resources.

 

Our People

Developing a law school with diverse research interests and with depth


Durham Law School has 53 full-time permanent academic staff spread across the research areas of Public Law & Human Rights, Commercial & Corporate Law, EU & International Law, Biolaw and Chinese Law with several colleagues in other areas. By 2020, the School will expand to 70 academic staff.

We will continue to grow our key research clusters will investing in non-core areas developing a law school with diverse research interests and with depth.
