Course: BA Economics
College: St. Cuthbert’s Society
Why did you choose Durham?
I initially considered Durham because it is ranked highly on University League Tables, and the Economics course had an exciting range of modules. However, since I did not have the opportunity to visit the University, I did a lot of online research and was really drawn to Durham because of its collegiate system, and wide range of extra-curricular opportunities. I also chose Durham because it’s such a beautiful city.
How has your experience of being an international student here at Durham been so far?
I have really enjoyed student life at Durham so far. Durham University and its community are incredibly welcoming and represent a really diverse range of cultures, and I have really enjoyed learning about different cultures by joining various cultural societies, and meeting people in my course and college. I have learnt how to be more independent and I have also learnt how to make plenty of new dishes!
What do you like to do in your free time?
In my spare time, I take part in Palatinate, Durham University’s Official Student Newspaper. As the Advertising Officer, I find businesses who want to advertise in the newspaper or on the website. I also recently took part in the Christmas Market Challenge organised by Durham Marketing Society, where I had the chance to have a stall in Durham Marketplace to sell Christmas products! I also go to cultural society events such as the Anglo-Japanese Society
What’s your favourite thing about Durham?
I would definitely say all of the restaurants and cafés. I simply love the food, especially the cake, that Durham has to offer!
What would you say to another international student thinking of applying to Durham?
I would say definitely consider applying to Durham. I know that it’s difficult for international students to visit Durham before applying, but I strongly believe that Durham University really provides a great international experience, because it puts effort into taking care of its international students, and creates an environment that make us feel welcome.
