Tier 4 visa holding students can normally work, paid or unpaid, up to 20 hours per week (Monday to Sunday), during term time or full time outside of term time (this cannot be averaged over any period).
Postgraduate students do not have non-term time, and are therefore restricted to a maximum of 20 hours per week (Postgraduate Research students can request up to 6 weeks per year of official holiday through their supervisor).
Students who exceed the UKVI allowed working hours will be reported to the UKVI and their visa will be revoked by the University.
Before a student engages in work, you are required to obtain official confirmation that the student is eligible to undertake any such work BEFORE they begin their employment.
If any member of staff employs a student without seeking prior approval, the University Student Employment Policy will be followed.

PhD students are allowed up to 6 weeks vacation each year. During that time they are allowed to work an 'unlimited' number of hours.
To work in excess of the number of hours specified on their visa a student must obtain written approval from their Supervisor.
