CAS Request Form

Please DO NOT submit this form if you cannot provide ALL of the information requested

Please note the following:

  • The evidence requested on this form is required by UKVI and MUST be verified by the University before a CAS is issued
  • If you do not submit the evidence requested, your CAS request WILL NOT be actioned and you will be required to submit a new request once you have all the appropriate documents
  • Please ensure that ALL your personal information in DUO is correct BEFORE you submit this form
  • You may be required to apply for your visa from outside the UK (except PhD students and students adding study abroad or a work placement)
  • The  TOTAL maximum size for ALL documents uploaded with this form is 7MB. Please ensure that it is less than this or you will not be able to submit it
  • Please do not contact us about your request once submitted. We will contact you if further information is required
  • If all required information has been provided, your CAS will normally be processed within 10 working days
CAS Data Confirmation Form
ALL students applying for a CAS will be required to complete a CAS Data Confirmation Form.


PLEASE NOTE:

We cannot issue you with a CAS more than 5 months prior to your visa application. 

You cannot apply for your visa until 3 months before the start date of your studies or the date you are returning to the UK (if applicable) .

 

Before you can start your CAS Request Form, you must download the CAS Data Confirmation Form and COMPLETE SECTION 1.

You must then FORWARD THIS FORM TO YOUR DEPARTMENT.

Ask your DEPARTMENT TO COMPLETE whichever part (1-7) of SECTION 2 best indicates the reason you are applying for a CAS.

Your department should also COMPLETE PART 8 OF SECTION 2 AND SIGN IT before returning it to you as a PDF file.

Once it has been signed and returned to you, please upload it and continue with your CAS Request Form.

Please DO NOT submit the CAS Request Form until you have received a signed copy of the CAS Data Confirmation Form from your department.

If your FULL NAME in DUO is different to that written in your passport (e.g. change in name due to marriage) please contact student.registry@durham.ac.uk and correct it BEFORE you submit this form, as your University student record and you passport MUST match for visa purposes.

Passport & visa information
Please upload a copy of your current Passport and BRP / Visa. Passport Details: Your passport must be valid for AT LEAST 6 months when you apply for your new visa. If your passport will not have at least 6 months allowance on the date you expect to apply for your visa, please apply for a new passport BEFORE you request a CAS. If you have not completed a Permission to Study Check for the CURRENT academic year please ensure that you you do this BEFORE you apply for your new CAS.

The Passport Number is normally found on the 'photo page' in your passport.

Please upload a copy of the page(s) in your passport IN COLOUR which shows your photograph AND your signature.

Please note: In some passports your photograph may be on a different page to your signature.

Your passport must be valid for AT LEAST 6 months when you apply for your new visa. If your passport does not have at least 6 months remaining on the date you expect to apply for your visa, please apply for a new passport BEFORE you request a CAS.

Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS)
If your programme requires ATAS permission please confirm that you have obtained this permission BEFORE you apply for a new CAS.


Please check with your department to see if you need ATAS permissions to continue your studies if you are not sure.

If you are changing programme AND/OR extending your current programme (and previously needed ATAS approval) then you will need a NEW ATAS certificate to continue your studies.

PLEASE NOTE: You will need a new ATAS certificate before you can apply for your visa. This may take several weeks to obtain

Check if you require ATAS permission 

If you answered YES to the question above, please upload confirmation that you have applied for your ATAS certificate. A screenshot of your online ATAS application will be acceptable as evidence.

If you are eligible to apply for a visa from within the UK:

If you are unable to provide us with a copy of your ATAS certificate, please provide us with a screenshot of your ATAS approval request. If it shows that the expected decision date for ATAS approval will be before your current visa expires, we will still provide you with a CAS. However, your CAS WILL be withdrawn if you do not provide us with a copy of the original ATAS certificate when you receive it.

PLEASE NOTE: You will NOT be able to apply for your new visa until you receive your ATAS certificate.

If you are NOT eligible to apply for a visa from within the UK:

If you are unable to provide us with a copy of your ATAS certificate, please provide us with a screenshot of your ATAS approval request. If it shows that the expected decision date for ATAS approval will be before your current visa expires, we will still provide you with a CAS. However, your CAS WILL be withdrawn if you do not provide us with a copy of the original ATAS certificate when you receive it.

PLEASE NOTE: You will NOT be able to apply for your new visa until you receive your ATAS certificate.

The UKVI can restrict the time that a student is studying on a course (or at a level of study e.g. Undergraduate, Postgraduate Taught etc.). If you have previously studied in the UK, on a course at degree level or above please print, complete and upload the form below.

Please download this form and provide details of any CURRENT OR PREVIOUS study in the UK which is at degree level or above. Please complete it offline and upload a completed copy.

It is not currently possible for students to study part-time at Durham University using a Tier 4 visa.

If you are planning to transfer to full-time study you will be required to leave the UK and apply for your new Tier 4 visa from your home country.

Section 10
Please ONLY complete this section if your last Tier 4 visa application was refused




If your visa has been refused and you are currently in the UK, you will no longer be able to attend any university activities (including teaching events). Once you have applied for your new CAS you should contact the Student Immigration Service to request an appointment with an Immigration Advisor to discuss the implications of your refusal. 

Please upload a copy of the letter you have received from the UKVI.

If you submit this form without including the COMPLETE refusal letter from UKVI, we will be unable to process your request for a new CAS and you will be required to complete a new form with the complete letter attached.

 

Information about applying for a Tier 4 visa

Please ensure that documents are legible, in colour and uploaded as a .pdf file

Please upload evidence which shows that you are now able to meet the Tier 4 requirements when you apply for your next visa (e.g. if your visa was refused because you did not show how you could meet the financial requirements please provide a copy of your bank statement which shows you are now able to meet the requirement).

If you submit this form without including evidence we will be unable to process your request for a new CAS and you will be required to complete a new form witht hte correct evidence attached.

Please ONLY complete this section if your CAS has expired and you need to apply for a visa


We cannot issue you with a CAS more than 6 months prior to your visa application. Therefore, if you do not expect to apply for your visa within the next 6 months, please DO NOT request a CAS.

Please be aware, that you cannot apply for your new visa until 3 months before you are required to continue with your studies.

In 500 hundred characters or less please explain why you did not use your previous CAS.

Section 12
Please ONLY complete this section if you are a PhD student and your viva will be held WITHIN 30 DAYS of, or AFTER your current visa expires


Please note: If you have already had your viva, the University is not able to provide you with a CAS to apply for a visa to undertake minor corrections.

Applying for your visa
Please read each point carefully:

Please be aware that only PhD students and undergraduate students adding year of study abroad or work placement are eligible to apply for their visa inside the UK.

If you are applying from outside of the UK please state when you plan to apply for your visa.

If you are applying from outside of the UK please build in sufficient time to allow you to return to the UK to continue your studies.

Check visa processing times

If you are currently outside the UK you will need to specificy the date you wish to return.

Please be aware, if you have a date to return to your studies, you will not be allowed to re-enter the UK until 1 month before your date of return.

If you are currently inside the UK please ignore this question.

If you answered YES to the question above, please provide a letter from your financial sponsor which confirms the value of the funds you will receive and that they approve your visa extension.

You must provide a letter (dated with 1 month of your CAS request) which clearly states that your sponsor is happy for you to continue with your studies and remain in the UK during the period of your new visa.


Your CAS will contain the following information and you will be required to provide evidence that you are able to meet these requirements when you apply for your visa:

  1. Any outstanding tuition fees, or tuition fees for the remainder of the academic year (if you are returning mid-year), and tuition fees for the next academic year if you apply after the 1st August.
  2. Any outstanding debt, for either accommodation or tuition fees (this includes amounts which are scheduled for payment by installment).
  3. Any overdue tuition fees from previous years will also be included in your CAS.
  4. PhD students who have completed their period of supervised study may also have added to their CAS a tuition fee for their 'thesis writing period'. 
  5. PhD students who are 're-submitting' their thesis may also be charged a re-submission fee by the University.

Please confirm that when you apply for your new visa, you will be able to provide a bank statement showing that sufficient funds have been held in a bank account for at least 28 days to support your application.

The amount in the bank account will need to cover AT LEAST the tuition fees you will be charged for the next 12 months of study AND sufficient funds to cover living expences as specified by UKVI.
