College Accommodation During Fellowships
The IAS works in partnership with all of Durham’s colleges, who provide vital support to its Fellowship programmes. While in Durham, every IAS Fellow becomes a member of one of the University’s 16 colleges. As well as providing accommodation, this membership entails inclusion in the Senior Common Room and in the college’s activities and events: formal and informal meals, seminars, lectures and other social occasions.
College SCRs are composed of academics from around the university, so as well as providing a welcoming social environment, college membership offers many opportunities for interdisciplinary conversations and research linkages both with senior college members and post-graduate students. The IAS Fellows are strongly encouraged to engage fully in college life.
Senior Common Rooms
Castle – Honorary Membership
In addition to full membership of a Durham college, IAS Fellows are also given Honorary Membership of the Senior Common Room at Castle or (as it is formally known) University College, which is located alongside the IAS on Palace Green. This membership gives them access to the historic castle and to the Senior Common Room, which they are welcome to visit at any time for coffee/tea, with guests. In addition, the IAS Fellows can take occasional meals at Castle during their tenure in Durham (see Fellows’ information pack for details). The college also holds a number of lectures and other events to which the Fellows will be invited.
