Professor Yashodhan Hatwalne
COFUND Senior Research Fellow at Josephine Buter College, Durham University (June - September 2014)
Professor Yashodhan Hatwalne was nominated by Dr Buddhapriya Chakrabarti (Mathematical Sciences), Professor John Girkin (Physics, Biophysical Sciences Institute) and Professor Paul Mansfield (Mathematical Sciences). Prof. Hatwalne is Senior Associate Professor at the Raman Research Institute, Bangalore. His recent work on chiral symmetry breaking in achiral solid sheets is a major contribution to our understanding of the structure of banded spherulites, the spectacular growth habit of many polymer crystals.
Working with Dr Chakrabarti, Prof. Hatwalne will apply aspects of Einstein’s General Relativity (in which topic the Mathematical Sciences department is a UK leader), to the elasticity theory currently applied to liquid crystals. The tools developed during this collaboration may have wide scale applications in a variety of soft matter problems.
