Finding an academic host

Before applying, applicants MUST seek the agreement of a Durham academic to act as their departmental host. Please note: applicants are requested not to simply email Institutes with no proposal or CV expecting that someone else will find a departmental academic host and research project for them.

When approaching hosts we would request that applicants prepare a research proposal and current CV. The Fellowship is designed so that Fellows can pursue research ideas of their own design. The host may help an applicant to refine their research proposal and should ensure that the appropriate facilities for the research project are available in the University. Where an interdisciplinary project is proposed, it is possible to include additional hosts, however, roles should be clear. Hosts are required to complete a proforma, which is necessary as part of the application documentation. The purpose of this requirement is to ensure that all Fellows appointed are provided with appropriate support and access to the resources necessary for their proposed research programme, that they are appropriately mentored and that they have the full support of the Department in which they will work and the Institute or Centre with which they will collaborate.

This section features useful links within the University’s website to help you find a potential host. Applicants are encouraged to identify a host working in the proposed field of research.

The COFUND team recommends using the Find an expert section of the research directory. This has a tool for searching the Research Directory. Here applicants can search for a particular research topic and find associated staff members or publications.

There are a number of ways to approach suitable members of Durham University Staff. You can:

  • (preferred) contact them directly (email addresses are available from their online profile - remember to provide a link to the Fellowship that you are applying for, a research proposal and a current CV) or;
  • contact the DIFeREns team ( who will pass on your request to the appropriate person (though, we would ask applicants to make every effort to identify a suitable host prior to contacting this team).
