Buckingham Palace to Durham Cathedral Pedometer Challenge
Thank you to everyone for taking part, this challenge has now ended. You can see the results here
We've partnered with Greenspace to challenge Durham University staff to team up and compete to see who can complete a virtaul 700 mile tour of some of the UK's most famous landmarks, starting at Buckingham Palace and ending at Durham Cathedral, in just four weeks.
The route is equivalent to 10,000 steps per day per person, to amass a total of 1,400,000 steps per team. Although this is predominantly a walking challenge, any steps recorded by the pedometer can be included; this may be as a consequence of cycling, running or playing team sports.
Teams will be of 5 and will nominate a captain. The captain will register online and can then invite team members to join. You can also register and then decide which team to join at a later date.
Each team member will have an individual login and be able to access the app or the website to record their steps. There will be a leader board so teams will be able to compare their progress to the targets, and also to each other.
Where individuals are not part of a team, or would like to be automatically assigned to a randon team, they will be able to register separately and take part in the challenge. To indicate that you would like to be assigned to a team please put (1) after your name, and we will then join you to a team before the challenge begins.
Prizes will be awarded for teams that reach the weekly and overall target as well as some other fun competitions along the way. The end of the competition will conclude with a prize ceremony on Tuesday 8th November.

The first 300 members of staff will receive a Durham University branded pedometer to track your steps throughout the challenge, this will arrive through the internal post.
The University is keen to support sustainable travel, and to promote the different options available for travelling to and from the University. You can find out more about this through the Greenspace Travel Information Webpages.
The challenge is based on the number of steps you record each day. To log activities through the website you must enter the reading from your pedometer as 'walking (steps/ pedometer)' to ensure that these steps are counted towards the challenge. You may have achieved these steps through other sports or activities, but they must be logged as 'walking (steps/ pedometer)'. An activity logged in any other form (e.g. swimming, cycling) will not count towards the challenge.
