Staff Survey 2011


We conducted our first staff survey in Autumn 2007 and were delighted that 2,265 members of staff (60%) completed a questionnaire. 

Our second staff survey has now been launched to get an up-to-date picture of staff views but also to enable to compare results and views with 4 years ago.  The survey will run from 1st November to 21st December 2011.

Message from the Vice-Chancellor

Capita Surveys and Research have been engaged to help design and run our survey.  Their involvement ensures the completed surveys remain completely anonymous and confidential. We will also be able to compare our results with other UK Universities.

All members of staff will recieve a questionnaire, most will receive their questionnaire online but staff without email addresses or access to a PC will recieve a paper copy.  Staff can request an alternative format.  If you receive your questionnaire online, you will be able to save your response and complete to it at a later date.  If you need another email or paper copy of the survey, please contact Capita on 0800 587 3115.

For each completed questionnaire, we will donate 50p to Student Community Action which will be used to directly benefit the local community.

Survey Champions have been identified in each department and college to answer questions and keep staff updated eg department response rates.  The survey will be open for eight weeks to give as many staff as possible the opportunity to submit their views.

While it is not compulsory for staff to complete the survey, it is important that we gather a representative set of results across all departments and types of work.  We're aiming for a response rate of 60% (the sector average is 57%).


From the 2011 Survey, we hope to receive information to help us understand:

  • What we do well
  • How staff views and issues have changed since our last survey
  • What doesn't work so well and then, through our action planning process, agree what we can do to change or develop a new approach

The results will be available in January 2012 and will be communicated both University-wide and at Department level.  We can then develop, agree and communicate a Staff Survey Action Plan.
