The Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS) is the main superannuation scheme in the HE sector. It is open to all staff in Grade 6 or above and members of staff are automatically entered into the scheme unless they opt out.
From the 1st October 2016 the scheme became a hybrid arrangement, with both of the following elements:
- The Income Builder – a defined benefit scheme in which your benefits are based on each year’s salary throughout the period of membership.
- The Investment Builder – a defined contribution scheme in which contributions reference to salary over £59,585.72 are invested. This took effect from 1 April 2020, following employer consultation that ran from 24 January to 23 March 2020.
