Guidance for Departments

The UKVI introduced the points based system (PBS) in 2008 for employers wishing to employ workers from outside the European Economic Area (EEA). Under the PBS, migrants must pass a points assessment before they can get permission to enter or remain in the UK.

The points based system is based around four tiers of entry into the UK. Each of the four tiers has different points requirements - the number of points the migrant needs and the way the points are awarded will depend on the tier. The system covers people from outside the EEA who are seeking work or study in the UK. It does not cover short-term visitors.

  • Tier 1 - Exceptional Talent
  • Tier 2 - Skilled Workers
  • Tier 4 - Students
  • Tier 5 - Temporary Workers (including sponsored researchers)

HR will provide information to departments and non-EEA potential / successful candidates on requirements of the immigration categories.
