Sustainable Travel Plan

Durham University’s strategy highlights environmental sustainability as a concept which should be embedded in all our activities. The University aims to initiate changes necessary to enhance its environmental performance and to assist with this, a Sustainable Travel Plan 2014-20 was established and is being implemented.

The Sustainable Travel Plan (STP) sets out objectives and targets which are monitored by undertaking travel surveys on a regular basis. An update on the objectives from the 2009 Durham Travel Plan up to April 2015 is available.

The University is committed to reducing the need to use private cars, making the best use of existing facilities, managing travel demands and promoting the use of more sustainable modes of travel. Staff Corporate Discount Schemes are in place for travel on rail and bus services. The University also has its own on-line car share scheme, electrical vehicle charging points are situated across the estates for staff, students and visitor use and for those interested in cycling, Bicycle User Groups have also been established. Staff and students are also able to take advantage of discounted travel on all Arriva bus services within their Durham District Zone, enabling unlimted travel for £1 per day.
