Travel Information

The University is keen to promote sustainable travel. The aim of these pages is to inform University staff and students about the different options for travelling to Durham City. Please follow the appropriate links for more information.

The University has an Integrated Sustainable Travel Plan 2020-25 (ISTP) setting out objectives and targets which are monitored by undertaking travel surveys on a regular basis. For more details please go to Integrated Sustainable Travel Plan.

Sustainable travel is a key factor in aiding the University in reducing its carbon emissions and also plays a key role in our Environmental Sustainability Vision, Policy and Strategy and Action Plan with detailed Key Performance Indicators.

Staff and students are able to travel for £1 per day on Arriva bus services within the Durham District Zone. Full details are available, including a map showing the boundary bus stops within the zone and price options. Why not download the Arriva bus app which shows real time scheduled timetable information and the exact location of the bus at anyone time.

Staff who travel to the University by bus are able to take advantage of Annual Corporate Discount Schemes for Arriva and Go North East services.

Staff who travel to the University by train are also able to take advantage of the Annual Corporate Seson Ticket with Northern.

The 41 bus service from Durham Railway Station via Durham Bus Station and New Elvet to Upper Mountjoy (Science Site) is available and runs during peak times in the morning and afternoon, Monday to Friday.

Additional travel information is also available on our own car-share scheme, cycling, walking and public transport, including bus and rail travel and Park & Ride. A Bicycle User Group is available and further details on different cycling events and activities can be found in the cycling section.

To facilitate elements of the Integrated Sustainable Travel Plan and assist members of staff, students and official visitors, several Electric Vehicle Charge Posts have been installed across the Durham University Estate, including Queen's Campus.
