The Global Politics MSc helped me to understand and appreciate the theoretical and moral debates around global cooperation and the global institutional framework. It nurtured my passion for human rights and development work, and gave me analytical and communication skills that were instrumental to my professional development. Since graduating, I have worked at Amnesty International, and I am now at the Commonwealth Secretariat, where I play an integral role in implementing and promoting their youth development programmes. The MSc definitely gave me the confidence and the academic foundation to pursue this career path.
After Durham I accepted a role as an Operations Director with the HALO Trust- an NGO that clears up landmines left over from conflicts. Whilst a fairly niche field that requires practical skills (e.g. how to remove a landmine without losing an arm), it also requires a broad understanding of the international development sector- which the GP course really set me up with. There was a great ratio of students to staff; seven students to two course staff, both of whom were great. In addition to the core syllabus they arranged a variety of external events and conferences. As well as being academically enlightening one was also always guaranteed a decent lunch at some point.
The Global Politics Masters programme served as a great transition from my finance and economics background to a more complex, interdisciplinary understanding of contemporary world issues. It allowed me to broaden my understanding of the philosophical and practical approaches to global governance, security, and risk studies, while at the same time allowing me the freedom to explore my own areas of academic interest through these frameworks. With the guidance and encouragement of my professors I discovered a curiosity and passion for the field of cyber politics. After completing my dissertation of the Internet as a public sphere, I felt like I had only scratched the surface and decided to continue my research at the PhD level. The Global Politics MSc provided me with the necessary skills to carry out independent and original research. It's a terrific program!

What our students say
The close-knit nature of the Global Politics MSc has allowed me to closely engage both with our lecturers, and fellow students in the program. The course has inspired us to debate economic and moral issues pertaining to World politics long after classes are over and made me feel part of an intellectual community not simply enrolled in a degree.
