My Ph.D. research seeks to understand changes and degradation taking place in the savannah vegetation in Southern Africa and examine the links among multiple environmental variables and their relationship to observed vegetation change over time. This research is of great importance as there is a pressing need for reliable, accurate, and up-to-date assessments on how climate variability, terrain, and anthropogenic factors are likely to cause changes in the savannah vegetation. Data and model validation will focus on Caprivi strip, Zambezi region in Namibia. Caprivi strip consists of National Parks which a protected with little human influence and communal areas which are intensively settled (subsistence farming and livestock). Both of these areas are nested within the wider area that will be captured using remote sensing in this study. The Caprivi strip is also within the Okavango-Zambezi transfrontier conservation zone (known locally as KAZA). Savannah vegetation in KAZA shows evidence of vegetation change and Zambezi region provides an ideal study area for assessing the impact of climate change and vegetation trends across southern Africa.
