QS World Subject Rankings 2017
(8 March 2017)
For the fifth year in a row Durham Geography has been ranked in the top 10 departments in the world in the 2017 QS World Subject rankings. In terms of scholars reading, using and acknowledging our books and publications, the gold standard measure of academic quality, we have been ranked 1st in the world on all citation measures for the third year running. Not only is our scholarship more widely cited than that from any other department, but a greater proportion of our outputs are taken up more widely than from other institutions. This is a testament to the depth and range of world leading work undertaken here, spanning every major sea and every continent, deploying cutting edge approaches drawn across from the physical sciences to the humanities.
Work in the department advances understandings of vital issues across many fields: from urban development and sustainability, to river floods and pollution, to the intersections of cultures and economies, to slope stability and hazards, to the fraught intersections of territory and politics, and the prediction of environmental change.
