Aims

• Critically reflect on how diversity impacts education in local and global contexts and what inequalities might emerge as a result
• Critically reflect on the relationship between education, intercultural issues, and key concepts such as identity, citizenship and social justice
• Develop critical understanding of multiple identities and attitudes towards others
• • Reflect on forms of communication and engagement in contexts of diversity and their implications for education.

Content

• The following topics will be covered:
• Internationalisation and globalisation as contexts for critical multicultural education;
• Global and intercultural citizenship;
• Interculturality and intercultural relationships;
• Multiple identities;
• Multilingualism and education;
• Intercultural competence.

Learning Outcomes

• Develop a critical understanding of the contexts and factors relating to international and comparative education in the 21st century.
• Demonstrate critical understanding of the theories, approaches, and practices of interculturality in the contemporary world and how they impact education.

• Articulate and employ key concepts and terminology in the field of International and comparative education, including, but not limited to, intercultural education, global citizenship education, multilingualism and the study of diversity in education.
• Communicate effectively orally and in writing on issues related to International and Comparative Education.

• Work on ideas and issues independently and as part of a group.
• Communicate and present ideas effectively through class presentations and writing.

Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module

• Learning: 10 x 2 hour workshops. These will introduce students to the above topics and will be facilitated by experts in the field from the School of Education. Each workshop will be supported by preparatory and follow-up readings and a learning task that students will undertake during the workshop.

Formative Assessment:

Presentation related to key learning from the module and aspects of the summatives.

Students who fail to attend these activities, or to complete the summative or formative assessment specified above, will be subject to the procedures defined in the University's General Regulation V, and may be required to leave the University
