Aims

  • To provide an introduction to the function of some of the range of techniques and equipment in use in health related imaging
  • To develop understanding of some of the underlying physical principles behind them

Content

  • Waves - Properties including amplitude, frequency, reflection, refraction, total internal reflection and optical fibres. Electromagnetic spectrum, Sound including ultrasound.
  • Radiation - Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Properties, half life
  • Imaging Applications including X-ray, Endoscopy, Ultrasound, Magnetic Resonance, use of microscopes, radioactive tracers

Learning Outcomes

Subject-specific Knowledge:
  • By the end of the module students will:
  • have a broad understanding of a range of physical principles including Waves, Sound, Electromagnetic spectrum, Radiation
  • be able to describe the function of a range of techniques and equipment in use in health-related imaging with reference to underlying physical principles.
Subject-specific Skills:
  • By the end of the module students will have acquired the skills to be able to:
  • Work confidently and effectively in a laboratory, with due attention to safety
  • Relate observations and data to underlying theory
  • Efficiently use high and low power light microscopes
  • Select and use basic physics equipment
  • Carry out appropriate mathematical/physical calculations as required.
Key Skills:
  • By the end of the module students will be able to:
  • Communicate effectively in writing
  • Apply number in the tackling of numerical problems and in the collecting, recording, interpreting and presenting of data
  • Assignment will assess SK1, SK2, SS1, SS2, SS3, SS4, SS5, KS1, KS2
  • Exam will assess SK1, SK2, SS1, SS2, SS3, SS4, SS5, KS1, KS2

Modes of Teaching, Learning and Assessment and how these contribute to the learning outcomes of the module

  • Theory, initial concepts and techniques will be introduced during seminars and practicals
  • Much of the learning, understanding and consolidation will take place through the use of structured laboratory activities, groupwork and discussion during sessions and students' own time
  • Understanding of physical principles, knowledge of the function of techniques and equipment and ability to relate them to each other will be tested in the coursework task and end of module examination.
