Get Onstage: Online in new online theatre festival

(27 April 2020)

Though the Covid-19 restrictions have forced us to cancel student theatre shows until further notice, we're excited to announce a new online theatre festival this June - and you could be part of it!

Onstage: Online - a digital festival

We're proud to introduce Onstage: Online, a digital festival featuring both short and longer theatre productions, from both student and local Durham talent.

The festival will run from Thursday 11 to Sunday 14 June.

Live shows will be streamed each day on YouTube and there will be scheduled pre-recorded shows, too.

Videos will also be shared on social media and remain on YouTube after the festival.

How it's happening

We're working with the Gala Theatre, Durham, which will host the shows on its YouTube channel.

All shows will be created in line with advice and restrictions on limiting the spread of the coronavirus.

Get involved

Theatre companies and performing arts groups in County Durham are invited to apply to take part.

Those selected will receive up to £250 to help create their production. Emerging theatre companies will also be offered free mentoring.

The deadline for applications is Monday 11 May. For more information, contact Kate Barton, our Head of Student Theatre: 0191 334 4316, assemblyrooms.theatre@durham.ac.uk

Student theatre at Durham

Durham has one of the most vibrant and exciting student theatre scenes of any university in the country. Durham Student Theatre includes 27 companies, presenting over 100 shows every year.

We recently completed a £2.4m renovation of our Assembly Rooms Theatre, which is open to students and the public. Though Covid-19 has meant the temporary closure of the Theatre, we look forward to welcoming you when conditions allow.

In the meantime, good luck to all Onstage: Online applicants, and we hope you enjoy the shows!
