Happy Diwali 2019!
(21 October 2019)
We’re proud to be an inclusive community, with students and staff from diverse nationalities and backgrounds. This October, we’re celebrating Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights.
All about Diwali…
Diwali celebrates victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance.
It is celebrated by Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and some Buddhists.
A five-day festival, it begins on Friday 25 October.
What’s happening in Durham…
A special celebration is taking place at our Oriental Museum, with crafts, traditional prayers, a shadow puppet performance and delicious Indian food. Members of the local Indian community are helping plan and stage the event.
Meanwhile, Ravi Odedra, an Economics student at Hild Bede, is starting a new Hindu student society. A welcome event including vegetarian Indian food and Indian classical music will be held on Saturday 2 November. More details will be announced soon.
Looking ahead to December, Squashed Mango student theatre company will perform Sita, a theatrical journey through Indian mythology and culture at The Assembly Rooms Theatre.
However you celebrate, have a happy Diwali 2019!
