Guide to Dress Codes
Please find below a quick guide that will help you understand the expected dress, according to the dress code written on the invitation or in the email you receive before attending your event.
Durham University strongly embraces equality and diversity and guests are encouraged to adapt this code in a way that makes them feel comfortable at the event.
Formal - Black Tie/Tuxedos/Formal National Dress. Black bow tie, black dinner jacket and trousers for men. Cummerbunds are optional. Evening dress or suit for women.
Academic Dress – Academic Gowns (event organiser will advise on what type to wear)
Lounge Suit and Cocktail Dress – Dark suit with tie for men; for women, a smart dress or equivalent, such as a cocktail dress or a suit.
Business wear –A suit and tie for men. Women can wear a tailored dress, trouser suit or skirt and blouse or equivalent.
Smart Attire – Suit trousers and shirt with an optional jacket and tie for men. Women can wear a dress or a skirt/trousers.
Casual – Casual wear, jeans are acceptable.
