Durham Centre for Academic Development

Programme Outlines

If you hold an offer of a place on a degree programme at Durham but your English level is under the level required by your department for entry onto a degree programme, you will be offered the possibility of taking a Pre-Sessional programme instead of retaking IELTS.

Please see the course options in the menu bar on the left-hand side of this screen.

Applicants with scores of IELTS 6.5 or higher are strongly recommended to take the one-month course in Preparatory Research Skills and English (PARSE).

Materials, task types and assignments designed specifically for students of particular academic subject areas are now also an integrated part of the Pre-Sessional study programmes. These include specific lectures, reading and assignment tasks for students of:

  • Law
  • Business Finance
  • Business Management
  • MBA
  • TESOL /Applied Linguistics / Education
  • STEM

Please see the relevant links on the left of the screen for more information on the different Pre-Sessional programmes.

Important Notes

  • For Pre-Sessional entry you will need to have an IELTS certificate that a) meets the entry requirements specified by your department, AND b) is a Secure English Language Test (SELT) IELTS, taken at a UKVI-approved test centre.
  • Please note that it is possible to take both SELT and non-SELT IELTS tests at UKVI-approved centres. If you are a non-EU student, this means you must request a SELT IELTS at an approved centre. Without a SELT IELTS, you will not be able to obtain a UK visa for your Durham Pre-Sessional programme.
